Macular Degeneration Help

Macular degeneration (or age-related macular degeneration, AMD) affects mostly people over the age of sixty. Genetics can bring this condition at an earlier age. When detected early, we can prevent further vision loss associated with macular degeneration. Dr. Luekenga, Dr. Graf, and our team at Valley Vision Clinic & Optical dedicate our days to providing the best eye treatment options in Richfield, Utah, and the surrounding areas.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a condition caused by damage to the central portion of the retina, called the macula. When this portion of the eye is damaged, a person’s central vision suffers.

Dilated Eye Exam

Dilated eye exams help us identify a person’s rate of macular degeneration and the right treatment. During a dilated eye exam, a patient’s eyes are dilated using special eye drops. We then use specialized tools to examine the back of your eyes for abnormalities.

Macular Degeneration Treatment

There is no known cure for macular degeneration. The only remedy is to stop further degeneration and maintain your central vision.

There are two forms of macular degeneration (or AMD):

  • Dry AMD
  • Wet AMD

Dry AMD Treatment

Dry Macular degeneration is when the retina scars and thins out. The best treatment for dry AMD is nutrition therapy.

Research has determined that certain vitamins and antioxidants help to slow down macular degeneration and stop further vision loss. Our optometrist will help you create the right diet plan.

You can also apply the vitamins directly to your eyes for faster results. Our eye doctor, Dr. Luekenga, led research to develop one such effective remedy, VitalEyes.

With VitalEyes, a high dose of vitamins is injected directly into the eye. An eye exam will show if you are a good candidate for eye vitamin.

Wet AMD Treatment

One out of 10 dry AMD patients progresses to wet AMD.

Wet macular degeneration is characterized by weak blood vessels that grow in the choroid, behind the retina. These weak blood vessels break and bleed into the retina. With time, retina scars and macula cells die.

Wet AMD is treated by stopping the creation of weak blood vessels, which ultimately stops the leakage. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is responsible for creating new blood cells. Eye doctors stop its function using anti-VEGF therapy.

In this therapy, our optometrist injects VEGF inhibitors into your eye. You will not feel any pain because we use anesthesia for this procedure.

Anti-VEGF works quickly, but you will need follow-up injections after some weeks for longer-lasting results.

We use our extensive knowledge and research to develop a specialized 3-day macular degeneration treatment that has shown outstanding results. We would love to tell you more about it!
