What Is Eye Disease?

Eye disease can refer to any number of conditions or diseases that affect the eyes. It may include something as minor as dry eye syndrome, or it may be more serious, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or glaucoma. Depending on the type and severity of the condition, treatment options can range from simple lifestyle modifications to medication or surgery.

Common types of eye disease include:

  • Cataracts: Cataracts are a common condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy and can cause vision issues.
  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure builds up inside the eye and can cause damage to the optic nerve.
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): AMD is an age-related condition that can cause vision loss in the center of your field of vision.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that can cause vision loss.

Comprehensive Eye Care Exams

One of our key services is a comprehensive eye exam. This includes testing for various vision problems, as well as checking for signs of eye disease. Our optometrist will visually inspect your eyes for signs of damage, check your pupils for abnormalities, measure your visual acuity and refraction levels, perform an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan or retinal imaging test, and perform glaucoma tests.

If any signs of disease are found during the initial assessment, our optometrist will then conduct a thorough eye exam to diagnose and develop a treatment plan. We also offer additional services such as contact lens fittings, vision therapy and low-vision aids to help you manage your condition.
