Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can be common, especially among children. Many Americans yearly seek medical treatment for an eye injury. Unfortunately, some people might not even realize how serious these injuries can be. At Valley Vision Clinic & Optical in Richfield, UT, we've know about some eye injuries you may need to look out for.

Eye Injuries

Eye Swelling

This has been a common complaint among our patients. The swelling is usually a result of an underlying injury or condition such. Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea. Iritis is the inflammation of the iris. Scleritis is the inflammation of the sclera, which is the white part of the eye.

Corneal Abrasion

An optometrist can diagnose you with a corneal abrasion if you have a scratch on your eye. This is a common injury, especially if you wear contact lenses. A corneal abrasion can cause pain, redness, tearing, and light sensitivity. Some people may also experience blurred vision. Consider eye care if you think you have a corneal abrasion.

Conjunctivitis

Commonly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the clear tissue that lines inside your eyelid. Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants like dust or smoke. Symptoms include redness, itchiness, tearing, and a discharge from the eye.

Blocked Tear Duct

Your tears are produced in a gland and then drain through small tubes called tear ducts. If your tear ducts are blocked, problems may arise. You need to see an optometrist if you think you have a blocked tear duct.

Detached Retina

The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. If the retina becomes detached, it can cause vision loss. A tear in the retina can cause a detachment. Symptoms include flashing lights, floaters, and vision loss. If this is not caught quick enough, a detached retina can lead to blindness.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. An increase in intraocular pressure usually causes glaucoma. Symptoms include headaches, eye pain, blurred vision, and halos around lights. In some extreme situations, glaucoma can cause blindness.
