Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, causing your vision to appear blurry and fogged up. Cataracts can make it difficult to read, drive, or see others. When symptoms of cataracts start to develop, it is vital to see an eye doctor and have the condition diagnosed and treated. Suppose you are experiencing cloudy vision, schedule an appointment with your optometrist to see if you are developing a cataract. The optometry team at Valley Vision Clinic & Optical in Richfield is dedicated to helping our patients see clearly by treating all eye conditions, including cataracts.

What is a cataract?

Cataracts are a cloudy substance that forms over the transparent portion of the eye. This condition can make a person feel like they are looking through a clouded glass or a fogged-up window. In the beginning, cataracts may not immediately interfere with daily life. Over time, they can become obstructive, lessening the quality of your vision. If blurry vision continues due to cataracts, it might be necessary to undergo cataract-removal surgery.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

More than three million cases of cataracts are reported annually in the United States. Symptoms of a cataract condition can be mild at first, then become more severe over several years. It is best to see an optometrist so your cataracts can be diagnosed and treated early. Common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Needing brighter lights to read
  • Seeing objects with a yellowish hue
  • Headaches
  • Eye pain

Causes of Cataracts

Most cataract patients develop the condition due to aging. However, there are several other causes. Our eye doctor can discuss any concerns and see if you are at risk of developing cataracts. Common causes of cataracts include:
